to entrepreneurial practices through street art
Ever since I began to visit the island of Sal in Cape Verde I could see that there weren’t many opportunities at all for young people here in creative arts and education. This is mainly because it’s a tourist island and as such everything is geared towards that… Most local people work in the tourism industry if they are lucky however the disparity between the tourists and the locals is huge.
This got me thinking … what about the young people here ? It’s clear they have never been given the opportunity to do a course like the one I created, especially with spray paints and I wanted to share that here.
WHEN?

CAPE VERDE, AFRICA
I could see a naive form of graffiti increasing to be scrawled around Santa Maria by young people and that means the interest is there! I visited so I approached TUI Care Foundation’s office here called Tui Futureshaper House and suggested to bring my workshop here in a course format culminating in an collaborative mural in the high street.
WHAT I’M OFFERING
I’m so pleased Tui Futureshaper needed something like I’m offering and believed In The vision. They commissioned me to offer a 3 day workshop and 2 day mural where we will be covering all the things that I offer in The UK. We both share a desire to make social impact through our practices so our values are definitely aligned. This will be the first workshop that Tui Futureshaper will have in their offices.
ADAPTING
The language here is Creole and Portuguese and whilst I’m beginning to learn these there’s no way I could make myself understood so I will have support of a local tour guide who is great with young people too. This is the first time I’m offering my workshops overseas but I feel very confident that the right team is around me which I’m grateful for.
MATERIALS
We have decided to use local materials and local spray paints because this is the type of materials that are going to be available for the young people. And whilst I really wanted to bring the non-toxic eco-paints over here I need it more I need time to get this going… So maybe this is something that I will look at for the future
