HUMAN NATURE

LEWES, EAST SUSSEX, ENGLAND

Human Nature is an eco city planning and development company that I have been commissioned by, to paint a mural with young people from the local school - Lewes Priory, for their new project in Lewes, UK. The mural must inspire the feeling of ‘HOPE’ for the public coming to the launch party on the 17th & 18th of September. The party will be held in one of the warehouses in an industrial estate in Lewes, and the mural will be there as part of the decoration of the space. As a street artist I aim to move my work towards more and more sustainable methods - scroll down to view how I am doing this.

THE MURAL

See in the gallery below the process of the start of the mural. Before bringing in the young people from Lewes Priory, my assistant and I are painting the words ‘Hopeful Futures’ which the young people will then come in and paint. Surrounding these words will be patterns & nature (which involves getting up onto scaffolding so this will be done again by my assistant and I.

WORKING WITH LOCAL YOUNG PEOPLE FROM LEWES PRIORY

In the gallery below I talk about my aims for this project & there are some photos from previous workshops I have done with Lewes Priory. During these workshops the young people learned how to spray paint, use stencils and create a composition.

MATERIALS AND SUSTAINABILITY

The future is eco spray paints. More specifically water based spray paints. The technology is getting better and better as the years go on, and the only reason people haven’t fully switched over is that there are some aspects of eco paints that aesthetically just don’t match up to the solvent based ones. However this is just adds an extra bit of challenge to my practise, and as I use the paints in my projects I send emails and reviews to the companies that make them to help them to improve their products. So hopefully all those emails will eventually get us further to fully using water based paints!

For this project (and other projects) however, I am only using the waterbased paints. These paints are also used when working with the public at UCANSpray because they are less harmful to human health, and it encourages the future generations to buy these brands & it gets them used to using them.

Human Nature as an environmentally friendly developer, of course aims to use the most sustainably sourced materials, whether they are locally sourced, recycled or re-used. Here are some snippets from their website about their sustainability:

“Based on the principle of the five-minute neighbourhood, where most daily needs can be reached on foot, the Phoenix will be stitched together by green and gentle streets that are safe for walking, cycling and for children to play.”

“We must restructure the energy sector towards efficiency and clean, affordable, renewable energy supply, change the way we move around, how, what and with what we build (and for whom), how we grow and consume food and deal with waste. How we turn the impact of our global footprint into a positive local handprint.”
